As Career Search Begins…
A few weeks ago my sister called me about her need to find another job. The many long conversations we’ve had about her job search provided me an “aha” moment and the inspiration to start this blog.
Like many of us, she was successful in her position and industry but didn’t have any real experience in career searches and how to maximize her efforts. And there is no reason why she should be an expert since the last time she looked for a job was 12 years ago! The company she is with for over 10 years is having business issues and is losing clients because it’s no longer competitive. She didn’t want to leave but as a single parent she knew she needed something more stable and that it was only a matter of time.
So we started the process of talking about a résumé and other “scary” subjects. Lo and behold before we even started, a recruiter called her and mentioned a position that she might be interested in. It was in the same industry and was a more senior position than her current one. She had been recruited! But she didn’t understand how it worked and her recruiter did not do a good job explaining the process and roles of the different people involved. So she called me for some advice. Here I am now in the role of her career advisor doing what her recruiter should have done… Can you guess what was missing from the process? Over the next series of posts I will share with you the inside scoop of career search.
